The total number of insolvencies (bankruptcies and proposals) in Canada increased by 28.4 percent in September 2009 from the previous month. Bankruptcies increased 29.1 percent whereas proposals increased 26.6 percent. Historically, monthly variations between the months of August and September have been mostly positive. In comparison with the same month last year, the total number of insolvencies in September 2009 was 43.3 percent higher than the number in September 2008. Consumer and business insolvencies have increased by 45.5 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively.

For the 12-month period ending September 30, 2009, total insolvencies increased by 33.6 percent compared to the 12-month period ending September 30, 2008. This is mainly due to an increase in consumer insolvencies.

Business insolvencies for the 12-month period ending September 30, 2009 fell by 6.5 percent compared with the 12-month period ending September 30, 2008. A reduction in insolvencies in the construction; transportation and warehousing; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; and retail trade sectors contributed to this decrease.
